MITCHELL RANGERS OPEN WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM (ROUND 12 - SUNDAY 18 JULY 2010) MITCHELL RANGERS 3 defeated WATSONIA HEIGHTS 1 GOALS –CANDICE LANCASTER, VIKKI MCNAUGHTON, LIBBY TOBIN BEST PLAYERS – MEGAN DENNY, VIKKI MCNAUGHTON, KELSEY PICKERING, MARG CLARKE, CHLOE SMITH Blustery conditions and a dry, lumpy pitch presented a challenge for the Rangers girls away against Watsonia Heights. Despite losing the toss, Rangers were gifted the opportunity to kick with the wind in the first half and this proved telling. With Watsonia under constant pressure in defence from some calm and intelligent football, it wasn’t long before Candice Lancaster ran on to a long throw from Izzy Philpott to slot home the opening goal. Marg Clarke, Kelsey Pickering, Emily Foster and Izzy Philpott rotated through the midfield and established a level of control that was to remain unchallenged for the whole match. After a spell of good possession soccer, Vikki McNaughton headed home the Rangers’ second goal in another set play, this time from a Marg Clarke corner. The second half began with Watsonia scoring from the kick off, which could have signaled a collapse by Rangers. However, lead by a great workrate in defence, the team wrestled back control of the match. With 25 minutes to play Libby Tobin in her return from injury beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one to give the girls a 2 goal buffer. Thanks to tireless work from Clo Smith, Louise Tinney, Petra Stagno Navarra and Sarah Beaumont the result was never in doubt from that moment forward. Emily Foster and Charlette Edmonds were unlucky not to get on the scoreboard, while Kirrily Moran and Cheyanne Sutton both turned in important contributions in defence. The standout performance was from Megan Denny who kept a clean sheet in goals in the first half, before dominating in the midfield in the second half. One of their best all round efforts to date.
